De Loft's S.M.A.R.T. concept truly came alive in this build. While it was a rather straightforward one with the focus placed mainly on the kitchen and the two bathrooms, the project came with its own set of challenges which made it all the more satisfying to do.
S (size) - This is a fairly new flat with generously-sized bathrooms. However, like in all HDB flats, there were no wet and dry areas originally. With the location of the toilet bowls, it was very difficult for us to carve out wet areas that were of appropriate sizes. The designer, however, had ideas of his own. By creating a collapsible shower screen in the Master Bathroom, he was able to expand the shower area to the toilet bowl so that when the homeowner uses it, the shower screen can be folded out of the way. This resulted in a very appropriately-sized shower for the homeowner to use.
M (mood) - The homeowner's favourite colour is blue. He also wanted everything to be bright and cheerful. These preferences were naturally taken into consideration and what was decided on was a two tone (blue/white) kitchen with golden handles. And as for the master bathroom, we made sure to incorporate blue tiles while ensuring the bathroom remained bright and clean with mainly off-white tiles for the wall.
A (art) - Considering the before and after, what was a dark and gloomy house is now a bright, cheery and comfortable place to live in. Everything from Space, Mood, Rhythm and Texture all combined to make the house a home. Just right for our single homeowner client to live in.
R (rhythm) - Coming through the main door, we see a well designed spacious kitchen on the left. Following through into the living room, we feel a sense of space and openness. There is absolutely no clutter even as we walk from the living room into the bedrooms, making the house a very livable space.
T (texture) - Texture in materials selection is always a priority for our designers. In this project, there was once again very careful selection of materials that gave the right feel of texture. For example, in choosing the white laminates for the top cabinets in the kitchen, the designer and the homeowner went through the pros and cons for choosing glossy laminates. And when it was finally decided that glossy laminates was to be used, the designer made sure to choose the thick 1.0mm glossy laminates for better application.
